2. Comprehension Worksheet: Fish for Leon
Remember as we do this exercise that to answer some questions, you will need to use clues and evidence in the text to
make decisions about what you’ve read.
-You can analyze the text by making judgments about the author or characters to answer the question.
So, I’m going to read the passage. Next……I’m going to read the first question.
I will need to find clues in the text to analyze in order to answer this question.
I’ll begin by rereading the first paragraph. It says Leon is excited to think about what he will put in his new fish tank.
I can analyze this information to say that the author shows that Leon is happy and excited to be getting a fish tank.
Partner-read “Fish for Leon.”
Exercise 1: What is the passage mainly about? What does the author want the reader to understand?
Exercise 2: Before you answer #2, What does Leon do so he can get what he wants? How does he act in the store?

Check In: Thank you for being more respectful when students were presenting their conversations in class Wednesday. James is absent today. Next week we will spend part of each class reviewing for mid-term examinations.
1. OPD Telephone 1 and 2: Pronunciation test
2. OPD Numbers: Discuss new words
3. Comprehension Exercise: Author and Me (Hand out Worksheet)
Introduce: Readers can learn to identify different kinds of questions.
Author and Me questions ask about something not directly stated in the passage.
Readers can identify Author and Me questions because they often include words
like the passage suggests,
-why did the author write about this, or
-what was the author’s purpose.
To answer an Author and Me question, search the passage for clues.
Then use the clues and your own ideas to figure out what the author means.
Practice: Echo read
“Beach Fun.”
How does the author feel about the beach in the first paragraph?
Let’s think out loud. The author does not directly state how he or she feels about
the beach, so we can use clues in the paragraph to figure it out. The author says that
going to the beach is a great way to spend the day and there is something for everyone.
I think someone who says these things would like the beach.
# Exercise 1: Reread silently and underline clues about how people feel.
How do you feel when you need to cool off? (The sun makes people feel hot. Find shade,
have a drink, go for a swim, cool off)
#Exercise 2: Reread the third paragraph
How would a beach look if people left trash on it? (Trash would ruin people’s fun)
How would it look if they picked it up?
Which way would the author like better?
#Exercise 3: How does the author feel about going to the beach?
What does the author tell you about it? (to tell how fun it is to go to the beach)
You are learning to use text evidence to answer questions?
The details in the story help you make an inference.
4. Take out your LITW story . We will listen to the audio reading of the next few
paragraphs and discuss any vocabulary that you do not know.
Homework: OPD Chapter: Numbers. Complete Game Tabs

- 1. Think and Search comprehension activity
Here’s another kind of question you may encounter during a reading exercise.
Think and Search questions have answers that are in more than one place in a passage.
A Think and Search question might include phrases like:
-the main idea of the passage
- -what caused
-alike and different
-compare and contrast.
Readers must search the passage for details, then think about how they fit together.
Echo-read, “Frogs and Toads” with students.
Text evidence to answer these questions:
How are they different?
How are frog tadpoles and toad tadpoles alike?
Think: These questions ask me to tell how the tadpoles are alike and different, so it is a Think and Search question.
Search: First, I’ll look for details. Both start as tadpoles that come from eggs. That’s one way they are alike. One grows into a frog. The other grows into a toad. That’s one way they are different.
GUIDED PRACTICE
Partner-read “Frogs and Toads.” Use the underlined information to complete question 1.
Use the following support as needed.

Discuss the photograph of the climber with students.
Focus on how the climber reacts to his encounter with nature.
Read together with students the information on page 47 from the Reading/Writing Workshop.
Play the video about how experiencing nature can change the way we think about it.
View the photos and read the captions with students.
Ask: What kind of encounter have you had with nature?
